Lily shifted from one foot to the other, willing Severus to say something... anything. But her best friend just stood there in silence. Lily sighed softly and shook her head. She was mad, nonetheless, she dropped her bag on the ground and took a step towards Severus. The redhead forced a fake smile on her face and looked at James.
"We are fine James... we were just... uhh... practising for Drama class..."
She momentarily looked heavenwards and inwardly cursed herself. Lily was a bad liar. And this time was especially bad. There was no drama class in Hogwarts. But of course her brain had to remind her of that a second too late. The silence that followed her statement was killing her. At that point she just wanted to leave and be alone.

Drama class?? Both Severus and James looked at Lilly. There was silence. James was the first to say something. "How 'bout you tell me what's really going on, Lilly?" His voice was much gentler than it had ever really been when addressing her and it was perhaps the first time he had used her first name since the day they met on the train and introduced themselves to each other.

Severus was surprised that no hexes had been thrown yet. In his experience, Potter never wasted a chance to just rush in with his wand up and fire any sort of curse his way as long as it ended in Severus' ultimate humiliation and pain. That was the way it had always worked. What was going on now?? He tried to speak. "Well, actually, we"-

The look that came out of James' eyes could have melted an igloo. "I said Lilly. Is your name Lilly? No."

Lily looked down and started kicking at the ground. This was an uncomfortable situation. On the one hand she sort of likedthatJameswassticking up for her, but on the other hand she wanted to keep Severus safe. Admitting that they had been arguing would end in disaster. She looked up when James spoke again; and sighed softly.
"It's nothing really," the red head insisted.
Severus tried to interject and James brutally cut him off. She frowned slightly, realising how serious the other Gryffindor was being. Sensing the building tension she stepped forward and instinctively placed a hand on James's shoulder. Lily looked up, her eyes pleading with him to leave Severus alone. She was normally more snappy with Potter but today she didn't have the heart to.

ooc; ooooh, lilly touched james; severus is pissed lol
There was not much on earth that would pull James' scalding glare from Snape's fearful expression but Lilly's touch on his arm did the trick. His hazel eyes flickered down at once to make sure he wasn't hallucinating her hand. He wasn't. Next he searched her expression, trying to figure out if she was telling the truth or just trying to protect Snivellus over there from another sound beating. He landed on the latter but in a move quite un-James Potter-like, he decided to let it go. "Alright" he sighed reluctantly, taking Lilly's free hand with one of his and giving it a friendly squeeze. "For you, I'll pretend that what you just said is the truth." He grinned, and turned to leave with Lilly, his hand still holding hers.

Severus let out a breath of obvious relief when Lilly stepped between him and Potter, clearly intent on dissolving the tense situation. He knew he could count on her. His relief morphed with incredible speed into revulsion and horror as she reached out to touch Potter's shoulder. And not to punch it or grab it tightly or do anything threatening that would keep Severus safe...no, she touched it almost in a girlfriend/boyfriend manner. Severus gagged at the thought, a soft pounding beginning behind one ear and his vision going slightly blurry. It was as they were turning that Severus, in a very un-Severus-like motion, reached for his wand and shouted the first thing that came to mind. "Stupefy!".

Lily heaved a sigh of relief. Severus would be spared, at least for the day. She was so deeply engrossed in that thought that she didn't notice James taking her hand and squeeze. Well, not until she felt the tug as he made to walk away with her. Lily's eyes widened and she looked up at James quizzically. Her body stiffened but she did not pull away, not at first. Potter's arrogant i-have-won grin was back. She scowled and shoved him with her free hand. That's when she heard Severus utter the spell. Lily turned around clearly shocked, expecting the worse....
OOC: The desired effect... maybe I should listen to Bellatrix's suggestions more often xP (and sorry it's short)
