Severus sat on the grass beneath his usual tree on the lawns of Hogwarts, his long nose buried in a potions book. Potions was fascinating. And much easier to interact with than other students, that was for sure. He felt grateful that Lucius Malfoy kept most of the other students from making fun of him...well, all except that toerag Potter and his group of moronic friends...but he still felt incredibly awkward all the time.
His mind flashed to one other person that never made fun of him, even without the "encouragement" of Malfoy and his gang and for a moment, he just stared off into space, thinking about her. Her friendly smile, her graceful movements, her excellent magical skills, her long red hair, her emerald green eyes, her smile...wait, he mentioned that already...
He shook his head to clear it of thoughts of Lily Evans and went back to reading.

"Evans go out with me," James Potter kept nagging as the students filed out of the Herbology Greenhouses.
Lily rolled her eyes in annoyance and kept staring ahead of her. Whether or not she replied Potter would keep talking and talking. He was an idiot, especially for picking on Severus. It's not like being a Slytherin made him a bad boy. She knew him. She knew the real Severus. And he was her friend.
Her face broke into a smile as soon as she potted the dark haired boy perched beneath their tree. Clutching her bag tighter she turned slightly and hurried in his direction. Behind her she could hear James scoffing and making rude remarks about Severus. It took every ounce of self control not to turn around and hex me.
She wanted to surprise him. Lily sneaked behind the tree, tapped his shoulder and then walked around the bark before he could see her. When she was sure that Severus was looking away, she jumped from the other side of the tree and sat down on the grass with a broad grin.

Severus was so involved in his book that he didn't notice the altercation between Lily and James a few feet away and he didn't hear any of the comments Potter was shooting his way or any of the rude laughter from Black. And he certainly didn't notice Lily approaching him, but he noticed the touch on his shoulder. Only Lily would touch his shoulder like that and his face lit up as he twisted around to try and see her.
His expression fell when she was no where to be found. Maybe he had just been thinking about her so much that his mind had conjured the touch? Just when he was reluctantly convincing himself that that was the case, a figure appeared out of nowhere next to him on the ground. He jumped, dropping the potions book on his foot. "Lily! Hi!" He toned down his obvious excitement. "How are you? How was class?"

She smiled warmly and before verbally greeting him or answering any of his questions, Lily hugged Severus. It felt like ages since they had last seen one another; even though in reality it had only been a few hours. She leaned against the tree and stretched out her legs, smiling.
"I am fine. And class was ok. You know how Herbology is..."
Turning to look in his direction she added, "What about you?"
Severus had not yet replied when she spotted the book. Lily reached for it simultaneously asking what he was reading. Noticing it was a potions' book, her eyes lit up. Both Severus and herself shared the same passion for the subject. She always looked forward to their classes with Professor Slughorn.

Severus couldn't keep the smile from spreading when Lily hugged him. He was truly glad they were best friends. Lilly was so sweet and friendly and they had so much to talk about. They were certainly beating the old stereotype into the ground that slytherins and gryffindors had to hate each other.
He shrugged in response to her question about class. The only class they had together was potions and it was the only class he ever really looked forward to, but that wasn't to say he wasn't clever or didn't get good grades because he did. "It was alright" he finally said. "We started working on the summoning charm a little bit even though we're not really going to need to know it for classes until next year."
He saw her expression when she noticed the book he had been reading and grinned, hugging his skinny legs to his chest. "I was just thinking about doing the homework for next week since all of my homework for this week is done" he admitted. He loved potions.

"Do you need a partner?" she asked
Her eyes widened and she hastily added, "To practice the charm with?"
Being in different houses had taken a toll on their time together. They rarely had the opportunity to sit and relax... well not alone at any rate. Her friends didn't like Severus; and his friends detested her. Lily was not only a Gryffindor but also MuggleBorn, or in the Slytherin's rude terms a MudBlood.
Lily smiled and decided that maybe Severus loved Potions a smidge more than she did. A sudden thought crossed her mind and she started laughing hard.
"I was just thinking about how Peter set James's eye brows on fire. Did you see that? It was hilarious."
She covered her mouth as more giggles escaped her lips.

Severus' eyes couldn't have gotten any bigger if he had used an swelling solution on them at that very time. The way Lily had asked if he needed a partner just slipped off her tongue so easily and it would be so easy to just sit there, tune out everything she said next, and pretend that she had really just asked him out. But try as he might, his ears let the next words in and his hopes sank. "Er...sure that would be fun" he mumbled, trying not to show how plainly he was hurting inside.
And then she was talking about bloody Potter! Severus' insides burned with hatred, twisting and writhing like live snakes. She knew the two of them hated each other...she knew it! Why would she bring him up...especially if, like she kept claiming, she detested the very ground he walked on as much as Severus did. He was getting more and more of a sinking suspicion that maybe Potter was wearing her down since they were in the same house, while Severus was not. "I don't look at Potter" was what he finally said in a clipped voice.

"That's brilliant!" she exclaimed excitedly.
Lily shifted so that she was now kneeling close to Severus. She looked him in the eyes - her own sparkling - and proposed a plan.
"We could arrange a session this Thursday. You are free after lunch, right? Just before our potion's class. It will be perfect."
The red head looked at her friend expectantly waiting for a reply. However, she soon ruined the moment by mentioning James. It was hard to miss the sudden change in Severus, he was acting cold towards her. Lily sighed and sat back on her heels with her eyes cast down.
"I was just saying... I meant..."
Shrugging, she moved back to her previous position i.e. sitting with her back against the tree and gazing ahead of her. Lily stole quick glances in Severus's direction, wondering for how long he would be grumpy. He of all people should know that she would never pick Potter over him.

Severus noticed how she closed herself off from him when he got irritated about Potter and considered staying grumpy (stealing your word lol), but he didn't want her to be mad at him. She was his only real friend. So he turned a little to face her and offered a tiny hint of a smile. "I'm sorry Lil. Let's not talk or think or waste another second on him." The fewer times he actually said his name outloud, the better.
He returned quickly to their previous conversation, trying to lighten the mood again. "Yeah, I'm free before potions. I'm sure Professor Slughorn wouldn't mind us using one of the potions rooms to work on our homework. I mean, he'd let you do anything." He tried not to sound bitter. Slughorn was notoriously famous for favoring students who he thought were exceptional and were going to go places. Despite the fact that Severus was probably the best potions maker in the entire school and he was only a third year, Slughorn just didn't really care about him. Unlike the girl sitting to Severus' left currently. He doted on Lilly...but then again, Severus couldn't blame him. Everyone doted on Lilly.

"It's fine," she brushed him off.
Lily was not angry despite her detached tone of voice. She narrowed her eyes and pulled her knees up to her chin, staring into space. The red head did not say anything else, allowing the silence to linger between the two. Although she wanted to, Lily could not stay upset at Severus for too long because she understood his attitude towards James.
Sighing to herself, she focused on what her Slytherin friend was saying. When Severus agreed to meeting before class, her eyes shone brightly. However, her expression soon fell at his next words. The harder Severus tried to hide the bitterness, the easier it could be detected. Lily gingerly stood up and grabbed her bag. She looked down at Severus with a hint of a pout.
"I don't like how you have been talking to me lately."

When Lily stood to leave, something Lucius Malfoy had said to him once rang through his head. "Why hang out with her at all Severus? She's holding you back. She's a pathetic mudblood gryffindor who always wants to be controlling you." He couldn't help but notice that Lily was being a touch controlling at the very moment; using the threat of leaving as a way to get him to say he was sorry. And so, without thinking, he shot back, "Well fine. If you don't like the way I talk to you then maybe you should just leave and that way I won't be talking to you anymore. Problem solved."
Almost the nanosecond the words were out of his mouth he wanted to take them back. He wanted to shove them back into his mouth and swallow them like food. He prayed for a miracle that Lily may have suddenly gone deaf and didn't hear anything he said in the last minute but he knew the likliness of that was a negative five on a scale of one to five. His lips went white and numb and he couldn't get the words to come out fast enough. "Lily, please stay. I'm sorry, I didn't mean it. Any of it. Please" he begged.

Her ivory cheeks flushed a deep red as soon as Severus's reply was out of his mouth. Lily could hardly believe he had actually said that. They were supposed to be friends... best friends forever and a day. She fought back the tears and tightened her hold on the bag, causing her knuckles to turn an alarming shade of white. The urge to stomp her foot and behave like a petulant child was almost too strong to resist. But she did.
"Fine. I will leave then and spare you the torment of having to deal with me," Lily said coldly.
The Gryffindor stood transfixed to the spot. Her head telling her to leave and her heart telling her to stay, especially after listening to Severus's words. He sounded sincere, however, that did not change the fact that she was upset. All Lily wanted was for things to go back to the way they were before; when Severus and herself could be friends without having to fight every five minutes.
She looked sideways to avoid his eyes, knowing that otherwise she would succumb and forgive him. To Lily's surprise James was walking towards them, looking incredibly determined.

"Lily..." The word was almost a whisper this time, his heart breaking nearly in half. She sounded really mad. What was wrong with him?? Why was he letting someone like Lucius Malfoy get into his head with comments like that. Who cared if Lily was a muggle born? He himself was only halfblood. He scrambled to his feet, his brain -- usually so quick when it came to potions -- had literally come to a halt. He couldn't think of a single thing to say to make her stay where she was. Fortunately, she didn't seem to be moving anyway. Unfortunately, Severus didn't seem to be the reason why that was so. His face, already white, paled even more.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
James had been stung when Lily ignored him earlier. He had tried (as suggested by Lupin) to tone down his...er...pig-headedness, as Lily seemed to consider his charm...and had thought they were getting along better, but her cold shoulder proved that theory to be entirely wrong. Now, James Potter could have his pick of any girl at Hogwarts. Even some slytherins threw themselves at him. He was charming, handsome, rich, pureblood (for those prejudice slytherins), funny, and a very skilled wizard. But for some reason, he had his heart set on the one girl who seemed to loathe his very presence.
Upset with the way things had gone, James had hung around by the doors to the school, thinking. Both Sirius and Remus had come by, Peter hanging around nervously like he felt he shouldn't be there in the cool group, but James had politely turned down their invitations to hang out. He just sat there, mulling over things in his head, until he happened to hear Evans' voice. It was a lot shriller than usual which meant she was upset. James knew everything about her and her gestures and voice and could tell in a heartbeat if something was wrong. And it was.
Getting to his feet, he marched in the direction of Evans, determined to find out who was making her upset and make them pay. And when he saw who it was, his day's quota of hapiness sky-rocketed. He could take his frustrations out on Snivellus. Getting closer to the pair, he kept his voice even to start with. "Everything ok?"

The unsaid words clogged her throat and all she could was stare at James wide eyed. Was this some kind of ploy? Was he playing knight in shining armour just to be annoying? Lily shifted her weight on one leg and felt the need to move in between the two boys, to protect Severus from James. Once again she remained stationary.
"Yes... everything is alright," she replied her voice breaking.
Lily's face was still flushed, her body tense and her free hand fidgety. The last thing any of them needed was a fight, although she suspected that James would love the opportunity to have a go at Severus. She was sceptical, that much was obvious. After all she had no reason to trust James.

In an alternate universe, Snape would straighten up and glare hotly at Potter, saying crisply, "You heard her Potter, everything's fine, so beat it." But this was clearly not an alternate universe and Snape's mouth remained closed, his legs wobbly.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The break in Lilly's voice was all James needed to hear to know that things weren't as fine as Evans was claiming they were. He took another step closer, sizing up the situation with his eyes. "If you've hurt her..." he began in a deadly serious tone, his eyes making the briefest of travels from Snape's palid face to Lily's beautiful one and then to his pocket where his wand was stashed, making his implications pretty clear.
ooc; wow that was bad sry
